Ely, Minnesota Fishing Vacation: Northern Minnesota Fishing Resorts Vacation
Minnesota Fishing Resorts...Minnesota Fishing Vacations
Think Spring for fresh green foliage, colder waters, bright sunny days.
Think late August and September for even more solitude on the waters, the beauty of the autumn colors, and cool evenings. Both Spring and late August-September are excellent Minnesota fishing seasons.
Think the long, lazy days of July and early August for good Minnesota fishing action, too. You may have to work a bit harder during these warmer water weeks...but the tantalizing, fresh taste of "Up Noth" fish are worth the exta effort!
River Point Resort is a leading Minnesota Fishing Resort with pristine, fish-abundant waters for MN family fishing vacations and group fishing trips. Ely, Minnesota fishing is why many fisherpersons choose to come Up North. Expect to fish for many species, including walleye pike, northern pike, smallmouth bass, crappie and bluegills.
River Point's unique location gives you access to fishing the waters of extensive Birch Lake and the South Kawishiwi River--both pristine waterways, plus the opportunity to have access to the famous Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wildernss for a day of fishing.
No need to seek out a resort on a chain of lakes...where River Point is located you will experience a lake boasting mile after mile of fishable waters with another 4 miles+ on the South Kawishiwi River...6,000 acres all total--one of the best Minnesota fishing resort locations.

Fishing At Its Finest! Minnesota Fishing Vacations! Northern Minnesota Fishing Resorts...River Point Resort
River Point is strategically located on the northern, most private end of Birch Lake where the South Kawishiwi River joins it. Golden walleyes, giant northern pike, slab crappies, tasty bluegills, and feisty smallmouth bass await the entire fishing group or family vacationing in this area of the Great North Woods.
There are plenty of bays, coves, islands and rocky points on Birch Lake and the South Kawishiwi River (entry #32 into the Boundary Waters) to provide you with a lifetime of angling memories.
Birch Lake is the largest Ely-area lake outside of the protected Boundary Waters lakes. Birch is 20 miles long, with 90% of its wilderness shoreline being undeveloped federal land. This kind of wilderness seclusion and lack of shoreline development does not exist on any other lake in the Ely area...and with River Point sited on the northern and most undeveloped portion of the lake makes it the best choice for your Minnesota fishing vacation.
Long and narrow, Birch Lake is like a serpentine river-lake, and at all times you can see from one shoreline to the other-easy to navigate with confidence. When the winds kick up a bit, no need to head for shore like you might have to do when fishing on a "round-type" lake-just slide into a cove or inlet and keep on fishing. With an amazing lake like this to navigate and enjoy, there is no need to look for a resort on a chain of lakes, or any other area lake, for fine Minnesota fishing. View River Point's strategic location on Google Earth Map.
Following is one of the latest press release about fishing beautiful Birch Lake:

"12 ROUTES TO HEAVEN"
"The DEADLY DOZEN (Minnesota) WALLEYE LAKES"
Lake #5: BIRCH LAKE
Minneapolis Star Tribune Newspaper
"Look at northern Minnesota, and you'll find Birch Lake. It's not small-5,628 acres-but it has a bunch of 1- to 2- pounders, roughly three times the state average, according to DNR tests. Maximum depth is about 25 feet. . ." "a lesser-known honey hole that is brimming with walleyes just waiting to be caught someday."
Birch produces trophy walleye averaging 9.27 pounds, according to on the latest DNR data reports.

Quite the fisherman…Adam B., from White Bear Lake, MN with his 19” small mouth bass. Great catch!
According Ely area DNR fisheries supervisors, "gill net testing is the barometer used by the DNR to see how the fish are doing in each lake."
Birch Lake continues to post high numbers of walleyes. Birch has produced good sized "eating fish" consistently each year. "In one of the latest assessments done, the walleye catch was 16.4 walleyes caught per gill net. That's the highest gill net count than any previous assessment done on Birch Lake," reported the DNR.
Anglers should find good numbers of walleyes in the 13 to 20 inch range. They will also likely catch smaller walleyes from year classes not yet assessed. Anglers should also have the opoortunity to catch walleyes from the other year classes. Some of those should be some pretty decent sized fish, reports the DNR.
A prime northern Minnesota fishing resort...River Point Resort..on the northern, most private end of Birch Lake.
Walleyes are prevalent in all class sizes with the 1 to 2 pound range being very abundant. So, whether it is potential trophy walleye fishing you're after or a wonderful mess of fish for tasty eating, Birch and the South Kawishiwi River is your number one choice for great fishing. Best fishing time is spring-late May, all of June, and into early July.

Northern Pike: Birch Lake also boasts a tremendous population of BIG northern pike. Prime fishing time for these "big ones" is mid-May to late June, mid August through September, although they can be caught at anytime throughout the season. Northerns weighing in and up to 20+ pounds are caught each season.
In addition to trophy walleye and northern pike, Birch is also known as an abundant producer of one pound slab crappies-some exceed two pounds, plus an ever-increasing population of the feisty smallmouth bass. Just a blast to catch these "fighters." Bluegill and largemouth bass round out the species of fish to be caught and eaten, or "catch and release" on your Minnesota fishing vacation.

With neither commercial fishing or netting allowed, a vast shoreline that is 90% wilderness, and low fishing pressure makes Birch Lake and the South Kawishiwi River your number one choice for good fishing.

So, think about securing your reservation at River Point Resort for your northern Minnesota fishing resorts vacation.
Suggestions on Fishing Equipment...
Light to medium action rods equipped with 6-12 lb. test line are important to have for a successful Minnesota fishing trip. If you plan on going afterthe huge northern pike in Birch Lake, think about having a medium rod awith 10-15 lb. test line equipped with steel leaders. Lead head jigs, floating jigs, and hook and sinker type rigs work very well when using live bait, which is most productive in the wilderness waters of northern Minnesota. Artificial lures such as crank baits, spoons, spinners are also effective.
For your convenienve River Point's Bait and Tackle Shop carries both live bait and artificial lures. Rods and reels are available for rent if you choose not to bring your own. And, the very knowledgeable, courteous staff will offer firendly advice along with complimentary fish cleaning, maps, and freezer service.
